Indian, U.S. Establishments compete to influence modus operandi of Mu'l'livaaykkaal Remembrance

[TamilNet, Thursday, 10 May 2018, 13:45 GMT]
The grassroots sentiment of Eezham Tamils, which originates from the opposition to ITAK politicians such as R. Sampanthan addressing Mu'l'livaaykkaal Remembrance, is being tactically deployed by an ITAK circle closely working with the Western Establishment against NPC Chief Minister Justice C.V. Wigneswaran. At the same time, a group of personalities operating from the overseas, allegedly trapped into the sphere of the Indian Intelligence, is also trying to influence the discourse countering the ITAK circle, an informed political source in Jaffna told TamilNet on Thursday. Commenting, Tamil political observers in Jaffna said both the Indian and the Western Establishments want Eezham Tamils to mark Mu'l'livaaykkaal Remembrance as a mourning ritual akin to that of 2004 Tsunami victims, bereft of any struggle-centric message.

The Colombo-centric foreign Establishments do not want Eezham Tamils to evolve their own movement with an independent political space to shape their genocide remembrance in proper native and global contexts.

At the same time, the occupying unitary state of genocidal Sri Lanka is sharply opposed to the remembrance event being collectively marked even as a mourning event.

Last year, the SL police was blocking the people to stay away from the premises of St. Paul’s Church at Mu'l'livaaykkaal, when the people started to put up memorial stones surrounding a statue that was erected the year before in remembrance of those who perished in Mu'l'livaaykkaal.

Finally, a priest involved in the move had to seek his ‘political space’ at the U.S. Embassy's Twitter account, the observers recalled.

At a situation bereft of proper leadership and guidance, the organisations and institutions of Eezham Tamils should have a clear outlook about the forces seeking to influence them, before being carried away by their agents.

The Eezham Tamils have a moral duty to make it clear to the forces seeking to influence the Remembrance Event by embracing the universal and struggle-centric significance of Mu'l'livaaykkaal Remembrance, the political observers further commented.

Both the Eezham Tamil students at Jaffna University who have a courageous record of marking remembrance events with a struggle-centric resolve over the years and the NPC which has called for international investigations on Tamil genocide through a unanimous declaration should cooperate without giving space for the influencers and their masters to divert the discourse, they further said.

In the meantime, Jaffna University Student Union must explicitly clarify its position with regards to the allegation targeting the organisation that the ITAK politician M.A. Sumanthiran, based in Colombo is attempting to recruit a section of it to turn against the Chief Minister of Northern Provincial Council Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, the independent observers said.
