[TamilNet, Sunday, 11 May 2003, 05:32 GMT]
A ceremony to mark the completion of training of four new teams of the Humanitarian De-mining Unit (HDU), each consisting of 60 members, was held Friday at the HDU’s headquarters in Paranthan, the HDU said in a press release.

The training of HDU was undertaken with the aid of the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA).

The director of the HDU presided over the Paranthan ceremony where the NPA’s technical advisors, Mr. Hans and Mr. Richard, and the HDU field officer Mr. Mariyadas, along with several others participated.

The training maintained exacting international standards and the HDU team leaders were given certificates at the event.

The new teams will begin working on de-mining and resettlement efforts Saturday.

Including the new members, the HDU currently employs 450 people in its de-mining efforts, the HDU press release said.
