Alaguthurai Ganesan (30), a father of three children, and Mr. Vinoth, a member of the Varathan group were killed and eight people were wounded in a grenade attack, allegedly by the paramilitary Varathan group, and subsequent shooting in Arayampathy in the Batticaloa district on Sunday night, sources said.

Four members of the Varathan group and four women were admitted to the teaching hospital in Batticaloa with injuries sustained in the attack.

The injured are Savarimuthu Raguvarathas (19), Thanapakiyarajah Vasudeva (21), Kandiah Chandrakumar (22), Subramaniam Thilakeswaran (21) of Varathan group and Nagamani Jegatheesawary (26), Karthiges Anoja (18), Seenithamby Logeswary (50) and Nagamani Niranjaladevi (24), hospital sources said.

Sources said that inebriated members of the Varathan group visited the ‘Selva Nagar’ in Arayampathy and started attacking villagers in the area. Mr. Ganesan had resisted the attacks and the Varathan group had then visited the home where Mr. Ganesan was staying and lobbed grenades.

Mr. Ganesan died and two women in the house were injured, the sources said.

Following this, there was shooting. The Kathankudy police are investigating.
