Indian trawlers have again started trespassing into Sri Lankan terroritorial waters in the northern sea to engage in illegal fishing depriving the livelihood of Vadamarachchi fishermen in the Jaffna district and depleting the marine resources, said a complaint lodged at the political office of the Sea Tigers in Valvettithurai division Thursday, sources said.

There was less intrusion by Indian trawlers in the northern sea following an incident in which Mannar fishermen took into custody several Indian counterparts poaching in Sri Lankan waters.

However Wednesday night several Indian trawlers inside Sri Lankan territorial waters in northern sea threatened the Vadamaradchy fishermen and robbed their catch after damaging their fishing gear and nets, affected fishermen in their complaints said.

Indian fishermen armed with swords and knives Wednesday damaged the fishing gear, nets and other equipments of one Vadamarachchi fisherman Vijayakumar, sources said.

Vadamarachchi fishermen have appealed to the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to safeguard them from being threatened by Indian fishermen who trespass into the northern sea in large numbers in their trawlers, sources in Jaffna said
