Akashi meets Trincomalee Muslims

A delegation of Trincomalee Muslims Friday requested the Japanese special peace envoy Mr Yasusi Akashi to channel the foreign aid allocated for rehabilitation and resettlement of Muslims, through organizations that represent the Muslim community, sources in Trincomalee said.

Muslim delegation that met the Japanese peace envoy Friday in Trincomalee briefed him about their stand on the present peace process.

"We are for peace. However, when a political solution is arrived at, it should ensure equal treatment for Muslims," Dr.K.M.Zahir, head of the Muslim delegation, told the Japanese peace envoy during the discussion, sources said.

The Muslim delegation comprised Dr.K.M.Zahir, President of the Co-ordinating Centre for Community Development (3 CD), Mr.A.W.M.Buhary, Secretary, 3 CD, Attorney-at-Law Mr.A.M.Anif Lebbe, President, and East Forum For Resources Development (EFFORD), Moulavi A.M.Jabir, Secretary, Kinniya Jamiathul Ulama, Mr.P.Munir, Vice president of EFFORD and M.A.Azeez, President, Kinniya Mosques' Federation.

Muslims in the east province have been badly affected. Muslims of Muttur, Kattankudy, and Oddamavadi had been affected due to activities by groups that are opposed to peace. Muslims have lost their properties and lives in the war, Muslim delegation pointed out to the Japanese peace envoy.
