People displaced by floods in Batticaloa are being given dry rations worth thirty six rupees for three days, and the victims, mainly very poor families who depend on meagre income from day labour, are unable to return to their flood damaged homes and are languishing in temporary shelters in schools and public buildings, sources in Batticaloa said.

The victims have pleaded with the Government officials to provide them with dry rations for atleast two weeks.

Meanwhile, Vakarai region 64km north of Batticaloa town has been severely affected by flood waters, sources in Batticaloa said. Vehicular traffic has been suspended on Vakarai-Verugal road as the road has been badly damaged near Kandalady.

Eventhough transport facilities have been badly affected in the Vakarai region, flood victims in the area have been receiving adequate relief supplies from District officials co-ordinated by the District Secretary M. Uthayakumar. Non-Governmental Organizations in the are also providing relief supplies, sources said.
