Displaced DS office moves to Kuchchaveli

[TamilNet, Saturday, 31 August 2002, 20:56 GMT]
The office of the Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretariat, which temporarily functioned at Nilaveli, has shifted to its original place after a lapse of seventeen years. The Kuchchaveli DS office was displaced in 1985 due to the mass displacement of people from the villages of Thiriyai, Kuchchaveli, Thennamaravadi and Kumburupiddy, which come under its administration.

The Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Mr. Earl Gunasekara, declared open the newly built office of the Divisional Secretariat at Kuchchaveli, about thirty five km north of Trincomalee town Friday evening.

The new office will start functioning from Monday, Kuchchaveli Divisional Secretary Mr. K. S. Jayachandra said Saturday. He said that his office was shifted from Kuchchaveli in 1985 following the outbreak of violence in the north of Trincomalee district. For some time his office functioned in Trincomalee because people lived in his division had moved to the eastern port town for safety. Thereafter his office was located in a building at Nilaveli, fourteen km north of Trincomalee town. People from the villages travelled to Nilaveli to transact their businesses for the last several years, he noted.

With the ceasefire agreement coming into force, displaced people from these villages have returned from the Vanni district and other areas for resettlement in their areas. Now with the shifting of DS office to Kuchchaveli from Nilaveli, the resettlement of displaced in Thiriyai and other villages can be expedited, officials from local non-governmental organisations said.

At the ceremonial opening of the DS office at Kuchchaveli Friday evening Trincomalee district parliamentarians M.A.M.Maharoof and K.M.Thowfeek and the Government Agent Mr.N.H.K.Nelumdeniya also participated.

The Kuchchaveli DS division comprises twenty-four Grama Sevaka (village level) Officers units.
