Demonstrators protest in Kaluwankerny

[TamilNet, Friday, 03 November 2000, 18:52 GMT]
About 500 villagers demonstrated in Kaluwankerny, about 20 km. north of Batticaloa, protesting against the massacre of Tamil detainees at Bandarawela detention centre last week and the slaying of Jaffna based journalist Nimalarajan.

The protestors also demanded that the government transfer Tamils detainees held in the southern part of the island to prisons in Tamil dominated North-East province.

The demonstrators assembled at Saraswathy Vidyalayam (school) and marched to the offices of the Divisional Secretariat and handed over memorandums addressed to the General Secretary of the United Nations, International Committee of the Red Cross, and other human rights organisations.
