Two casualties in Morakkoddanchenai

A Sri Lanka Army soldier was killed and another wounded when the Liberation Tigers fired at a sentry post in front of Morakkoddanchenai SLA camp, 25 km. north of Batticaloa, around 3 p.m. today. A 14 year old boy, Sinnathamby Vijeyan, was killed and three others were wounded when the troops retaliated sources said.

The wounded civilians, Pushpalatha, 10, Shanmukarajah, 22, and Pakyarajah, 18 were admitted to Batticaloa hospital.

The SLA soldier killed in the incident has been identified as Waninayake. The wounded soldier, Priyantalal, was admitted to Batticaloa hospital.

All transportation was disrupted on the Valaichenai road for nearly an hour and tension prevailed in the area the sources said.

Meanwhile unidentified gunmen fired at the EPDP office in Kaluwanchikudi 5 km. south of Batticaloa, on the Kalmunai road, around 1.45 a.m. this morning. The office was opened on Friday. No one was injured in the incident sources said.

Kattankudy police are conducting investigations.
