No jobs, no compensation for lands seized by CEB in Champoor

The Ceylon Electricity Board has failed to compensate for agricultural and residential lands it had seized from Eezham Tamils in Champoor of Moothoor East in the district of Trincomalee. The company owned by the unitary state of genocidal Sri Lanka has also discriminated Tamils in providing jobs during the construction phase despite its earlier promise to give preference to the people of the area in employment during the construction of the plant and after. Nothing seems to materialise, but the construction work of the plant is almost 40% complete, said Rural Development Society representatives in Champoor.

The CEB is pushing ahead with the project transforming the abandoned project of coal power plant into a wind energy project.

Apart from the lands seized through Gazette notification during the regime of Mahinda Rajapaksa, the CEB had also obtained additional lands for the previously planned drainage canal system for the coal power plant.

Since the coal power plant project has been abandoned, the lands obtained for the canal system could be returned, the RDS representatives said.

In the meantime, illegal logging is also threatening the jungle vegetation and the ecosystem of Champoor in addition to the destruction of trees by the increased militarisation and industrialisation, they said.
