Colombo discriminates Tamil-speaking graduates in teaching appointments in East

[TamilNet, Sunday, 04 March 2018, 15:03 GMT]
The SL Governor of Eastern Province Rohita Bogollagama has excluded a disproportionately large number of Tamil-speaking graduates from the appointments for teachers in the three districts of the Eastern Province, the President of Batticaloa District Unemployed Graduates Association S. Sivakanthan has blamed. He was talking to media after complaining of the alleged breach of fundamental rights at the SL Human Rights Commission office in Batticaloa.

While the majority of the population in the Eastern province are Tamil-speaking, 127 appointments in Trincomalee district and 122 appointments in Ampaa'rai district have gone to Sinhala graduates, and that was also circumventing the standard vetting procedures for required scores, Mr Sivakanthan said.

Out of 387 appointments, Tamil-speaking teachers were only 79, and the district-wise breakdown was at 44 in Trincomalee, 25 in Batticaloa and 10 in Ampaa'rai, he said.

The SL Governor has exerted political influence on SL Public Service Commission (PSC) through the Secretary of the PSC to appoint a large number of Sinhala graduates as teachers in Trincomalee and Ampaa'rai districts, he alleged.

“While we were awaiting for the implementation of a promise made by SL President to provide 2000 appointments to unemployed graduates, the SL Governor has come with this disproportionate move,” he said.

Bogollagama was the SL Foreign Minister during the genocidal onslaught on Eezham Tamils in 2009.
