NPC urges UNHRC to refer SL State to an international judicial mechanism

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 28 February 2018, 14:01 GMT]
The Northern Provincial Council passed a resolution on Tuesday urging the UN Human Rights Council to refer the SL State, which has not only failed in implementing the UNHRC resolution but also gone on record opposing to comply with it, to an international judicial mechanism headed by the UN. The resolution also urged that the IC, especially the USA which co-sponsored the UNHRC resolution, the European Union and India to mediate a political solution between the Tamil nation and the Sri Lankan State.

Tamil people are a Nation with their traditional homeland in the contiguous North-East region of the island and that they are entitled to self-determination, the resolution, addressed to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, further said.

The Government of Sri Lanka has not only failed to take any meaningful steps to implement the UNHRC Resolution, which it co-sponsored, but the SL President, the Prime Minister and the senior ministers have clearly and categorically proclaimed that they would not fully comply with the UNHRC Resolution, the NPC said in its resolution on Tuesday.

Similarly, the SL Government has not only failed to take any sincere steps towards finding an equitable political solution, but it is still insisting that the non-Buddhist people including the Tamil people must accept the foremost place to Buddhism demonstrating the oppressive mindset of the Sinhalese Government, the NPC resolution said.

The NPC passed a key resolution two years ago in February 2015, calling for real international investigations on genocide against Tamils committed by the successive governments since Ceylon's independence from the British in 1948.
