Released Tamil prisoner says all inmates subjected to wrongful convictions

The kith and kin of imprisoned Tamil prisoners of war and political prisoners staged a protest in front of Jaffna Bus Station on Wednesday morning expressing their solidarity with the political prisoners who are on hunger-strike at New Magazine prison in Colombo. Two Tamil prisoners recently released from the prison, attended the protest and one of the released prisoners, 32-year-old Komahan Murugiah, a former member of Jaffna Municipal Council, gave an emotional speech, in which he said all of the inmates languishing with him during the past 6 years were wrongfully convicted based on forced confessions in the past.





14 political prisoners are on hunger-strike for 8th day at New Magazine prison despite worsening health conditions.

Komakan was arrested on 23 August 2010 and was released after long struggle on 29 February 2016.

While the SL Court in Vavuniyaa dismissed his case after his lawyers argued against forcefully obtained false confession written in Sinhala, the court in Colombo was delaying another case without dismissing it.

Mr Komahan, who was given an emotional welcome by the protesters, urged the global Tamils to unitedly fight for the release of the Tamil Prisoners of War.

Fr. S.V.B Mangalarajah, the chairman of Justice and Peace Commission of the Catholic Diocese of Jaffna, who also addressed the protesters and media said it was important to struggle for the release of all political prisoners. The release of a few cannot be an excuse anymore he said.

All Tamil prisoners of war and political prisoners should be released through a common amnesty based on a principled decision by the SL State, he said.
