Centre of Media Persons for Change (CMPC), a journalist movement based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, observed 10th year anniversary of the assassination of Eezham Tamil journalist Sivaram Dharmeratnam (Taraki) at a journalists meeting, which was organised on Sunday to mark the World Press Freedom Day and the 5th year of the CMPC movement, media sources in Chennai said. Young journalists from mainstream media groups participated in the event discussing conflict-reporting, self-realization on the role of the journalists in the larger society dominated by a corporate culture, commitment to principled approaches and focus on human rights of the oppressed nations and people.

“The journalists are also part of the working class. We need to realize that we are being deployed as components to serve the needs of the corporate structure. May Day is the day when the workers throughout the world mobilise for their rights. But, we journalists are still in confusion in realising whether we are workers or not,” said Mr Tamilarasan, a video journalist, discussing the role of journalists on May Day.

Young journalist Maga Tamizh Prabhagaran talked about the importance of ‘conflict zone reporting’ and how Indian and Tamil Nadu based media were hiding the facts of the genocidal onslaught against Eezham Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka.

Mr Anand, a visual media journalist, who has worked at several locations across India, paid tribute placing a photo with the title “Salute life and journalism of Taraki”, at the event. “You can't kill an idea with a bullet,” a 13-minute video recording of Sivaram sharing his experience on TamilNet was also screened at the event.

Mr Anand also shared his experiences on covering 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots in Uttar Pradesh and the role played by the Central and State governments in the conflict.

Journalist Arun Mozhi Varman shared his thoughts of journalists becoming people-centred and ideology-driven in order to serve the larger interests of humanity in general.

The roles of big media establishments in the genocides that have taken place were also discussed in the meeting, particularly the role played by the Indian and Tamil Nadu governments with the direction of Indian Intelligence during the genocidal onslaught against Eezham Tamils.

“Even if we take simple facts of what we report about the conflict in Kashmir or the conflicts in the Northeastern frontier of India, we report the news of the Indian Army without any independent verification or research. But, what Taraki had championed for Eezham Tamils was strengthening a reporting mechanism adhering to the journalistic principles in real time,” a young journalist discussing the topic at the event, observed.

Mr Manikandan, the chairman of the CMPC spoke about the importance of the movement and the way it grew throughout the last 4 years. The CMPC has conducted meetings on the subjects of freedom of expression, budget discussions, debates on US President Obama's visit to India and discussions on the dispute between the owners of the The Hindu and its former editor Siddharth Varadarajan, the organisers said.
