Muslim militant leader shot dead in Ea’raavoor

Unidentified persons shot and killed a Muslim person Tuesday night around 7:30 p.m in his house in Ea’raavoor in Batticaloa district. He is suspected to be the leader of an unidentified armed group operating in the eastern province, according to Batticaloa police.

The man killed was identified as Abdul Samad alias “Kalu Samad, 41.

He was also known to have links with certain leading underworld characters in Colombo including the recently killed underworld leader “Anamalu Imthiyaz,”, media sources said.

Civil sources in Batticaloa said the man killed in Ea'raavoor had been a strong supporter of a leading politician and is alleged to have procured arms for various groups.

He was also engaged in cashew trade, police sources said.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police Eastern Range (Central) Edison Gunatilake told media that such an incident had been reported but no information had been received that the man was linked to any type of group or gang.
