A Colombo undergraduate Tamil student has been detained in Dehiwala police station on suspicion that he had provided shelter in his room for the suspected suicide bomber who is alleged to have killed Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle on April 6. The student was one of 37 civilians arrested on Thursday in a cordon and search operation conducted by the police in Dehiwala. 11 other civilians are also being detained in the police station.

The father of the student was taken into custody by a team of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials about a week after Fernandopulle killing, media sources said.

Police said inquiry had revealed that the relatives of the suicide cadre had rented out a room of the university student's house at Kawadana Road in Dehiwala for more than one year.

Meanwhile, relatives of student said he had been deprived of the opportunity to sit for university examination which was held on Thursday.
