Akkaraipattu security tightened

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 12 August 1998, 16:44 GMT]
The Special Task Force (STF) has taken special measures in the area around Akkaraipattu, 55 km south of Batticaloa, to stop reported Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) infiltration into the area, said sources.

The area is subject to repeated cordon and search operations with two masked 'spotters' engaged to identify LTTE members and sympathisers.

The STF has also established a temporary camp in Aththiyadi, in the Aalayadivembu Division, 2 km from Akkaraipattu, through which the infiltration is suspected to take place and asked the public to use the route as little as possible, said sources.

Meanwhile the Kurukulamadam Special Task Force (STF) forced a group of male residents of Kirankulam, 15 km south of Batticaloa, to chop firewood in the jungle when they reported for their weekly stint of hard labour to the STF on Sunday, said sources in Batticaloa.
