[TamilNet, Sunday, 16 April 2006, 10:55 GMT]
Mannar town has been brought under twelve-hour police curfew with effect from 5 p.m. Sunday evening too 5 a.m.Monday. Mannar Police through public address system informed the people of Mannar Sunday afternoon around 4 p.m., residents said.

Sri Lankan armed forces and the police Sunday morning conducted a cordon and search operation in the Mannar town covering main bazaar area, sources said.

Civil sources fear a massive cordon and search operation is likely to take place with the imposition of the night curfew following the increase of claymore mine attack against the Sri Lankan troops.

Meanwhile the security forces and the police Sunday morning conducted a cordon and search operation in the Mannar town main bazaar area. Troops stopped all vehicles and searched for weapons. Police took about one hundred bicycles to the police station and released them on the production of license and other valid documents to prove the ownership of them, sources said.

Police sources said the operation was conducted following the increase in claymore mine attacks against government troops and to detect such mines being concealed, sources said.
