Singapore Red Cross conducts medical camp in Nilaveli

Fifteen-member medical team of the Singapore Red Cross Society (SRCS) has been conducting a medical camp in the Tsunami victim welfare centre, which is located in Nilaveli Mosque premises, north of Trincomalee district since last week. The services will be provided till 28th of January, said Mr.Leong Seong Kwok, Manager of SRCS Services Division.

Dr.Suresh Pillai, Consultant in the Department of Emergency Medicine in the National University Hospital is the head of the SRCS medical team.

The team comprising five medical officers, five nurses and five SRCS volunteers are manning the medical camp which is looking after the medical care of the Tsunami victims of the Kuchchaveli division, north of the Trincomalee town.

Currently about 8840 persons, including 2500 families are staying in 12 welfare centres in the Kuchchaveli division.

About 14000 persons of 3673 families have been displaced. Of them about 22000 are staying with their relatives and friends, according to district secretariat source. Till Tuesday 155 persons died due to Tsunami and about 8 reported missing, the sources said.

SRCS officials said that they have treated about 300 patients in the clinic. More than 50 percent of them were suffering from fever and the rest for fractures and other various ailments. Medical team has also attended minor surgeries.

The Trincomalee district branch of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) is co-ordinating the medical camp activities, Dr.E.G.Gnanagunalan, District Chairman of SLRCS said.
