Court asks SL Police for progress report on Nimalarajan case

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 20 January 2004, 19:27 GMT]
The Jaffna Magistrate Mr.R.T.Viknarajah Tuesday instructed the Jaffna Police to submit a progress report on the Journalist Mylvaganam Nimalarajan murder case on the next date of hearing, February 24, legal sources said.

The Nimalarajan murder case was taken for further hearing Tuesday at the Jaffna magistrate's court.

Two suspects Michael Collins and Karalasingham Sinthupalan who were absent on the earlier date appeared in court Tuesday and submitted medical certificates for their absence on the last date. The magistrate after perusal of their medical certificates withdrew the open warrant issued on them on the last date of inquiry. The two suspects are said to be members of a para military group Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP), legal sources said.

The third suspect Jayachchandran Uthayapalan was produced in court from remand. The Magistrate extended the remand order on him till February 24, legal sources said.

As the Officer-in-Charge of the Jaffna Crimes Branch Mr.Ranjith de Silva failed to appear in court Tuesday for the fourth successive date the Magistrate instructed the Registrar of courts to inform him through the chief inspector of the Jaffna Police to submit a progress report on the inquiry into the case on the next date of hearing without fail, legal sources said.
