Vavuniya judicial officers demonstrate in support of CJ

[TamilNet, Friday, 07 November 2003, 01:27 GMT]
The judicial officers in Vavuniya protested against the alleged motion by the United National Front Government of Sri Lanka in parliament to impeach the Chief Justice (CJ), stopping work at half-day on Thursday to hold a demonstration, sources in the Northern town said.

The protesters carried placards, saying that the politicians should take their hands off the judiciary, and that they were fully behind the CJ. They condemned the impeachment motion. The placards were in all three languages used in the country: English,Tamil and Sinhala.

Attorney Mr. M. Sittampalam, the head of the Bar association in Vavuniya and an additional magistrate in the town, said that the independence of the judiciary has been maintained for several years, and that regardless of whether it comes from the party in power or opposition, political interference in the affairs of the judiciary would not be allowed.
